High West Yippee Ki Yay
The Outlaw Whiskey That Is Reinventing the Market
High West Yippee Ki Yay is a whiskey that truly is different from most of its competitors. On a whim, the High West Distillery threw two different kinds of rye whiskeys into wine aging barrels that formerly held vermouth and Syrah just to see what would happen. What happened was a naturally sweet, deliciously smooth whiskey that incited so much excitement the only appropriate name for this new type of whiskey was the famous catchphrase of overjoyed cowboys and angry skyscraper heroes: Yippee Ki Yay.
Like its rowdy name suggests, this not your grandpa's whiskey. Having been distilled in wine aging barrels, the product has a naturally sweet, but not overpoweringly sugary taste that has proven to be very pleasing to the senses. These flavors have been described by consumers as warm with caramel and espresso undertones but ultimately ending in dry leather and zesty citrus flavors. Other consumers have reportedly noted spicy undertones of black pepper, smooth berries, vanilla, and honey flavors, and even a light spearmint taste. There seems to be something for literally everyone in High West whiskey, regardless of taste or preference.
This whiskey should be served at room temperature to allow the bouquet room to breathe, but some consumers have found that adding ice does not hurt the flavor and can actually bring out a richer profile in the taste of this unique whiskey.
Having an ABV index of 46% and rated at 92 proof, this product is made up of two different rye whiskeys; one of which is two years old, and the other being more aged for 5+ years. The younger whiskey contains a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% barley malt. The other contains a mashbill of 53% rye and 47% corn.
This unique and satisfying whiskey has received high ratings across the board. It received the silver medal in the 2016 Whiskies of the World Awards, along with being commended by Wine Enthusiast, the Beverage Testing Institute, and Drinkhacker. Prominent publications like The Wall Street Journal and People Magazine have featured High West Yippee Ki Yay with warm words for this smooth drink.
