Hardywood Singel
The Blond Belgian ale of choice from Virginia
Launched in late 2011 by two childhood friends, Eric and Patrick, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery located in Richmond, Virginia is an institution with a purpose: use local ingredients, create beer of the highest quality, and remain friendly to the environment. With new breweries in Charlottesville, and Goochland (forthcoming), Hardywood is going all out to conquer the beer connoisseurs in the Virginia area.
The Hardywood Singel is the flagship beer of the brewery - a Belgian style blond ale with an alcohol by volume strength of 6.2%. The inspiration for this beer can be traced all the way back to the Trappist monks of the Middle Ages. The Trappists (a strict Roman Catholic order from Europe), brewed beer in their monasteries. 'Dubbels and tripels', were their signature styles, but they also consumed a lighter version within their walls, as daily intake. The Hardywood Singel is Hardywood Park’s tribute to the monks' drinking habits.
Golden yellow in color, the base malt of the singels are imported, the flavor is fruity and peppery, and the finish is dry and smooth. Its looks, smell, and taste combine to achieve an ale that you can enjoy for hours - no wonder the monks made it a part of their daily diet so many centuries ago.
A triple version of the single, with an alcohol strength of 8.5% ABV, known as the super single, is available in limited edition, provided you are ready to scout bars and stores for it. The single is a favorite complement with any 'southern' cuisine and is known to be a food-pairing beer, another reason for its huge popularity. Whether it is seafood and fried chicken, or pasta and cheese, the Hardywood Singel is a side that you can keep having with your main course. The beer manufacturers heavily recommend the single with savory southern fare like crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, shrimps and grits. It is the ideal refreshment for a hot summer day in Virginia.
Unfiltered, the beer is vegan friendly, and is also certified kosher with natural ingredients. In the 2016 Virginia Craft Brewers Fest, the Hardywood Singel bagged the third prize award in the Belgian Blond and Saison category. Not bad for an ale that prides itself as more of an everyman's drink, than as a luxury choice. Ultimately, that is what sets apart the Hardywood Singel. It manages to create a European flavor and experience, but retains its down-to-earth Virginia appeal and popularity.
